The metric system (SI units) is the international standard used by virtually every country in the world for science, medicine, and trade. The imperial system (feet, pounds, gallons) is primarily used in the United States for everyday measurements, and to a lesser extent in the UK (miles for road signs, pints for beer). Canada officially uses metric but also uses imperial informally for height and weight.
Only three countries have not fully adopted the metric system as their official standard: the United States, Liberia, and Myanmar. All others use SI units for official purposes.
